Meet the Team – Rekindling the RED MILLS Record

It’s been a busy month for the RED MILLS export team with customers sending horses all over the globe to compete at some of the most famous horse racing and show jumping events in the world.

Connolly's RED MILLS Export TeamExport Team (L-R) Fan Da Lennon, Jackie Dyer, Patricia Moynihan, Michelle Flynn and Marie Waldron.

In our #MeetTheTeam blog, we caught up with Michelle Flynn who along with the team in our export department has coordinated sending RED MILLS Feed to the Breeders Cup in California, The Melbourne Cup in Australia and the Longines Global Champions Tour in Doha.

RED MILLS manufacture all its feed here at the mill in Goresbridge, from where it is sent all over the world. We currently export to over 72 countries.

After the success of Joseph O’Brien’s REKINDLING in the Melbourne Cup, we caught up with Michelle Flynn, to find out what happened behind the scenes to ensure that the RED MILLS feed was there ready and waiting for the horses when they landed in Australia.

Making sure the feed lands on time is vital. We are looking after feeding some of the best horses in the world and it’s critical that their diet remains consistent when they are travelling. Horses are resilient and most are accustomed to the travel but to maintain good health and performance it is essential that their nutritional needs are looked after.

Australia have strict regulations for importing animal feed – Ahead of the Melbourne Cup I made our application to the Australian Government via their Department of Agriculture to request the necessary Import Permits. In the meantime, I continued to liaise with each of the trainers with potential runners to confirm their feed requirements.

This involves knowing what products we need to send and how much is going to be required. We also need to know the quarantine dates and when the horses plan to arrive at the training facilities in Australia.

Once I knew the requirements I placed the order with our Export Warehouse. All of our export products in NFMS (Nutrient Fresh Managesment System) packaging are dispatched from our Export Warehouse.

Next on my list was the air freight, the feed is flown via DHL which can take up to 48 hours. The pallets flew direct to Melbourne where they cleared customs before being delivered to the stables. Normally the feed will arrive a week ahead of the horses.

The Australian authorities require the feed to be irradiated, this takes place at a facility in Mayo. When the pallets containing the feed returned to Goresbridge I booked the Airline collection from the Mill to Dublin Airport.

While the feed was away being irradiated, I applied to the Irish Department of Agriculture for our export documentation and prepared our in-house documentation.

We work closely with IRT International Horse Transport who look after the transportation of the horses. They keep us informed of the whereabout of the horses and in turn we advise them of when the feed is due to be dispatched for customs clearance & delivery to the quarantine stables.

There is a lot of paper work, which can be tedious but it’s incredible to think that the feed that is being made here by our team in Goresbridge is fuelling these incredible horses.

Joseph O’Brien’s success on Wednesday morning was unbelievable and I think I speak for the whole team at RED MILLS when I say how proud I felt watching Rekindling cross the line.

Rekindling is the 6th horse fed on RED MILLS to win the Melbourne Cup.
